This workshop gets children to engage more deeply with the 5 senses and the 5 elements of Nature, each day dealing with a particular sense and element. The first day would focus on the sense of touch and the element earth, focusing on developing the children’s understanding of their own bodies, and the various factors that contribute to the welfare and destruction of the earth. The second day will focus on developing the child’s inner ear, sensitivity to sound and music, and also train children to be more intuitive. Children will be introduced to all kinds of music – ranging from jazz to folk to classical – and engage in fun theatre exercises related to hearing. We will also focus on the element of air and the way it moves to create music and energy. The third day will focus on the developing the child’s sense of taste, and how one can cultivate a taste for the cleaner, better things in life. Children will taste different kinds of foods and drinks. We will also discuss the importance of clean drinking water that goes into making these foods and drinks, and the issues of water pollution, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, the food chain, etc. We will also introduce the children to techniques in voice modulation. The fourth day will focus on the developing the child’s sense of sight. We will work with various sources of light – candles, torches, etc – as well as objects such as mirrors and glass sheets - to engage children in improvisations related to the image, shadow, reflection etc. Using concepts such as colour, shape, size, children will be challenged to perceive in new ways. They will also be introduced to the theory of Plato’s Cave and what it means to ‘see’ and to be ‘blind’. We will also discuss the importance of sunlight as a source of life, the ozone layer, photosynthesis, the food chain, etc. as well as today’s ‘blindnesses’ – social apathy, insensitivity to the environment, fascism, unkindness to each other, etc. The last day, we will focus on developing the child’s sense of smell. Children will learn the powerful connection between smell and memory. Through pranayam, children will learn how to centralize their energies for greater concentration and productivity. Children will be introduced to the element of Ether, and gradually inducted into the Sixth Sense – and how developing our intuition can help us.
