Creative Writing Workshops...
The course differs slightly for different batches based on age group (i.e. 6-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-12 years). Classes are held once a week. Quarter 1 : Storytelling through Puppets Quarter 2 : Comics, Verse & Plays Quarter 3 : Writing and Producing a Film Quarter 4 : Writing and Illustrating a Book These classes help us lead your children into the exciting world of imagination. We seek to stimulate your children's minds and bring smiles to their faces as they discover new ways of expressing themselves through poems, puppet shows, plays, stories, comic strips, films, and much much more... In the first quarter, children are introduced to storytelling through familiar stories such as the Ramayana, Akbar & Birbal tales, the Panchatantra, Aladdin, etc. Through the classic story structure of the hero versus the villain, the winner versus the loser, the good versus the bad, they are encouraged to think for themselves. They learn to invent their own timeless characters and weave their own stories as they made their own puppets and performed puppet shows. They are taught to innovate by rewriting famous stories with new endings and developing new stories combining famous characters from different stories. They will also be exposed to the works of well-known international children’s authors such as Roald Dahl, Meg Cabot, J K Rowling, Enid Blyton etc. Over the next two quarters, children will explore different kinds of writing, including comic strip writing, playwriting, and screenwriting, wherein children will actually create their own comic books, write and produce their own plays, and also write and make their own films, all of which are extremely visual media and easy for a child to relate to. In the last quarter, we guide and encourage children to write and illustrate their own books. Storytelling is a fantastic and timeless art that transcends time and space. Stories occupy the collective memory of a civilization, giving us ideals and values to live upto. Times change, but stories live on, in us, through us. They are what keep us alive. The most precious legacy that our ancestors left us was this priceless treasure chest of stories heard and passed on, which keeps the child alive in all of us. Have you ever known a child – or an adult for that matter - who would not like to hear a good story? As the verbal tradition came gradually to be replaced by the written, slowly storytelling became the domain of the ‘writers’. And the stories on our grandmothers’ lips came gradually to be replaced with books, and later, movies, and now, the Internet. Sadly, storytelling as a fascinating way of capturing the flavour of history and the times we live in has been replaced with more efficient and ‘useful’ skills in schools known as ‘essay writing’ and ‘composition’ and ‘comprehension’. As “Important things” like spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, sentence structure, paragraph writing etc. frighten the child into having to be ‘correct’, the magic world out there awaiting the child is forgotten, with writing often becoming a task that must be completed in order to escape punishment. What a tragedy for a child to lose touch with the very world that makes childhood such a special place! Instead of making writing a dreary and frightening experience leaving children wishing they did not have to learn how to write, the aim of this class is to make writing fun for kids, and to bring back the magic!
